Why are some things on sale?
Inventory
A lot of times, a store or website will “over buy” a certain item in anticipation of future sales. When this particular item doesn’t sell as expected, it will be among the first to go on sale. Sometimes we think if an item is on sale, then something must be wrong with it, that it’s probably defective or damaged in some way. Most of the time this isn’t the case. More often than not, an item will go on sale simply because of surplus inventory.
Take what happened in 2008, for example. Many department stores bought their average number of items given the prior year’s sales, only to realize that in fall 2008, with the economy taking a nosedive, it was likely that a lot of items would probably not end up selling. Because of this, stores were literally giving merchandise away at discounts pretty much unheard of. Nothing was wrong with the inventory—they just had too much left and needed to sell what they could. In late October of 2008, for example, I was browsing an online forum and noticed that quite a few women mentioned a 70% off sale at Saks. Up to this point, I didn’t own a high-end handbag. So I figured that during lunch I’d head over to Saks and see what the fuss was about. Luckily for me, I left the office at around 11:00 a.m. and got there before the lunchtime crowd. Saks had been pre-selling for their 70% off sale which was set to start the next day. The first thing that shocked me was that no display table was without a red sale sign. Post 2008, we’ve gotten more accustomed to seeing a measly little sale table set off to the side, with slim pickings (most of the good items are snatched up early on). But in this case, everything was fair game, and the dozen or so women shopping were each carrying ten or so handbags that they’d grabbed.
To say it was stressful would be an understatement. I knew that I needed one classic, black leather bag, and had narrowed down my list of designers purely based on aesthetic and value. I hovered around the Chloe section and managed to grab the last Chloe Paddington in stock. On my way to the checkout line, to have a sales associate set it aside so I can purchase it the next day—when the sale would officially start, a woman abruptly stopped me in my tracks. I saw her a couple times cross my path, but was too busy mentally calculating what the ultimate cost would be. It ended up coming out to $495, a price I thought was high at the time, but considering that the bag retailed for somewhere around $1890, was definitely a huge bargain.
“I couldn’t help notice the bag you found. How committed are you to it?” She asked, firmly planting herself in my path.
“Umm, I’m definitely buying it—if that’s what you mean?” I replied, as sternly as I could.
